Support Group for parents of children with Special Needs

Amar Jyoti Institute of Physiotherapy organised an interdisciplinary awareness session for the “Support Group for parents of children with Special Needs” on Tuesday 8th January 2019 at the Amar Jyoti auditorium. Support group was created in 2016 by the Neuro-Physiotherapy department. This session was unique in its own as other interdisciplinary professionals like Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, Psychologist, Special Educator (Early Intervention Programme) and Social Worker who are an integral part of the team, joined hands together at this platform looking into the holistic development of the child. 

The purpose of the meet was to orient, motivate and empower the parents about the specific roles, work and importance of each professional to bring about a change in the overall development of their child with neuro-developmental disabilities. Team work would relieve the parents from their burden of care. 

The gathering was initially addressed by Dr. Manjusha Dobhal (PT), Assistant Professor, Amar Jyoti Institute of Physiotherapy (AJIPT), where she explained the significance of regular play based physio- therapeutic interventions in the form of lifting, handling & carrying techniques, stretching, strengthening, balance and mobility training. Moreover emphasising on better outcomes with early intervention services.

Ms. Kanchan (Occupational Therapist) expressed her role in training the child in their activities of daily living and sensory integration with emphasis on autistic children.

Mr. Nigam (Speech Therapist) & Ms. Smriti (Speech Therapist) laid emphasis on regular practice of a task for the development of speech and language skills.

Ms. Purnima (Psychologist) spoke about the relevance of psychological testing and behaviour management.

Mrs. Ayesha (Special Educator for early intervention programme) told about the strategies to facilitate the cognitive development and preparing the child for school. 

Mrs. Rastogi (Social Worker) explained the importance of disability certificates, various government schemes and pensionary benefits which would bring about a great relief in caring for the child with special needs. 

A total of 200 people participated including children with special needs, their siblings and parents who became an integral part of the group. The session meet was summed up by Dr. Sampada Jahagirdar (PT). This was followed by New Year Celebration party which was facilitated by Neuro Physiotherapy faculty and administrative staff of AJIPT.

All the parents willingly participated the session, enjoyed and appreciated the efforts of the team.
